Brakes for most makes & models

Without any argument braking is the most important aspect of vehicle performance and safety. As the frontline between your car and the one in front of you pulling up at the lights the modern braking system is of extreme importance in the overall safety and integrity of your everyday vehicle.

As a highly developed hydraulic system each part of the braking hardware needs to be understood when it comes to getting the very best stopping performance. Starting with that initial push on the brake pedal the initial part of the braking sequence sees a metal rod push the piston in the hydraulic master cylinder which is normally mounted on the vehicle firewall which in turn directs high pressure brake fluid through its internal channels and out through the metal brake lines which in turn then directs the required amount to the front and the rear of the vehicle through the inbuilt front/rear proportioning valve.

The next step in the braking chain is the flexible lines that live under the guards and run directly to the brake calipers. Flexible brake lines allow the wheels to steer and move with the suspension all without creating a brake in the system. Finally the high pressure fluid is channeled into the front and rear brake calipers which contain pistons (the number of these pistons varies depending on the size and weight of the vehicle) that press the brake pads directly onto the brake disc and generate the necessary friction and energy transfer to slow the vehicle.

Its here at the brake pad face where the friction material of the pad meets the metallic brake disc that the greatest heat in the braking system is generated. Due to the basic physics of ‘conservation of energy’ the vehicles forward motion is transferred directly to this heat component which is then channeled out via convective internal brake disc slots known as vanes. The match of brake pad friction properties to metal structure of the brake disc is carefully engineered to ensure that for any given vehicle optimum brake performance is possible under all encountered conditions.

Like all complex vehicle control and actuation systems periodic inspection and maintenance of the braking system is paramount in keep performance and safety levels at their optimum. Manufacturer recommend tolerances and service intervals are to be adhered to as a bare minimum maintenance schedule.
